2023 winners

Below are the results for the 73rd Annual Green Eyeshade Awards. Our judges select the best from each main category, then select one winner of the Green Eyeshade.

Judges didn’t have to select a winner in any category if they believed the entries didn’t merit it. To correct errors or omissions, please email contest administrator Tim Dodson.

THE GREEN EYESHADE WINNER

South Florida Sun Sentinel

Innocence Sold seriesBrittany Wallman, David Fleshler, Spencer Norris & David Schutz

Judges’ comments…

  • “This is an exemplary work of investigative journalism at its best. Brittany Wallman, David Fleshler, Spencer Norris and David Schutz took on long-term institutional inertia regarding sex trafficking, particularly involving children. This meant deep diving into this system of trafficking, not just those individual cases that make up this system. The response to this reporting was widespread and continues, I suspect, to this day. The follow-up to this reporting will be felt for years. It made a difference. I will remember this series for a very long time. This is what journalism is all about and is meant to be.”
  • “Comprehensive, gripping stories about a world few people are aware of. The combination of in-depth print pieces and well-produced, engaging podcasts makes this a clear winner. Superb storytelling with an emotional and memorable impact.”
  • “Deep reporting and thorough public records use. Overall, great investigative work.”
